Load Characteristics Of An Alternator— When the load on the armature is changed, Its terminal voltage is also found to change. the reason for this change is due to the voltage drop in the alternator, Because of armature resistance Ra , armature leakage reactance XL and armature reaction which in turn depends upon the power factor of the load. The load power factor has a considerable effect on the armature reaction in the alternators i.e. at unity, zero lagging and leading. At unity power factor, the effect of armature reaction is only cross magnetizing.

Hence, there will be some distortion of the magnetic field. At zero lagging power factor. the effect of armature reaction will be de-magnetizing. To compensate for the de-magnetizing effect, The field excitation current needs to increase. At zero leading power factor, the effect of armature reaction will be magnetizing. To compensate for the increased induced E.M.F. (Electro Motive Force) and to keep the constant value of the terminal voltage due to this additional magnetizing effect, The field excitation current has to be decreased.

› Continuity check of the windings
› Insulation resistance value of the windings to the body
› Insulation resistance value between windings
› Checking the earth connection of the machine
